Moscow Destination and Travel Guide

The city of Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation. It has a population of about 10 million people and is an administrative, financial and industrial center of the country.

The city of Moscow was founded in 1183 and gradually rose to power competing with Kiev and Veliky Novgorod for the control of the Russian lands. For over 200 years Moscow ceded its political significance to St. Petersburg following Peter the Great's decree of 1712  to move the Russian capital to St. Petersburg. In 1918 the leader of the Bolsheviks Lenin temporarily moved the capital back to Moscow, and the city remained the Russian capital ever since.

Nowadays, Moscow is home to many architectural monuments and places of interest that will be of primary interest to Russian history enthusiasts. Medieval churches and the constructivist-style buildings of the Stalin regime co-exit with each other in a somewhat peculiar fashion. Star sites include the Moscow Kremlin, the Red Square, and the Tretyakov Art Gallery.
