One-Day Tour of Novgorod

A not so frequently visited town of Great Novgorod (Veliky Novgorod) is a true gem of Russian history. Founded in 859AD, Novgorod is the oldest town in Russia. It was an influential administrative center of the Medieval Russia and it competed with Moscow for the control of the Northern Territories. It miraculously managed to preserve its historic character with dozens of medieval churches and chapels still existing today.

If you want to immerse yourself in the Russian history and to experience authentic medieval Russia you should go to Novgorod of all places. The much touted Golden Ring Tour consisting of several old towns in the vicinity of Moscow will not show you as much Russian history and architectural monuments as the tour of Novgorod will.

As it takes about 3 hrs to get to Novgorod from St. Petersburg by car, it is possible to visit Novgorod in one day. Below is a recommended itinerary.
